A Home Restored, a Burden Lifted

How a devastating fire became a story of unexpected provision, generosity, and renewed hope.

For years, Marlen faithfully served as the cook at CEDCAS, a free health clinic in Heredia, Costa Rica, led by Lillian, a Mesa Worker. Day after day, she poured love into her work, preparing meals and caring for those who come through the clinic's doors.

That’s exactly what she was doing one September day when she received devastating news: the house next door to hers had caught fire, and the flames were quickly spreading to her own home, where her son David was asleep.

By the time firefighters extinguished the flames, Marlen’s home was severely damaged. By God’s grace, David had escaped safely, and no one was harmed. But the home that Marlen had worked so hard to maintain—and that Lillian’s ministry had helped improve through various projects over the years—was devastated.

And yet, standing in the midst of the destruction, Lillian witnessed something more powerful than the fire.

She witnessed faith.

As Lillian held Marlen in her arms, reassuring her that they would rebuild what was lost together, Marlen never asked, “Why me?” Instead, her thoughts were fixed on what mattered most: her son was safe.

In that moment, Marlen and Lillian were reminded that sometimes, miracles don't mean the absence of loss. Sometimes, the miracle is that even in the midst of devastating circumstances, God protects what matters most.

And the miracles didn't stop there.

In the days following the fire, Lillian reached out to her supporters—friends and family who have faithfully sustained CEDCAS's ministry for years. She shared Marlen's story and invited them to help rebuild her home through financial gifts toward materials and labor.

Just one month later, Lillian shared an incredible update. Not only had they reached their $15,000 fundraising goal, but the generosity of supporters had exceeded all expectations, bringing in nearly $19,000.

With these gifts, Lillian and her team got right to work restoring David's room, which had suffered the most damage. They replaced the floors, doors, and electrical wiring, gave the room a fresh coat of paint, and furnished it with a new bed, dresser, television, and clothing. Just one month after the fire, David had a safe, comfortable space to call his own again.

But God had another unexpected blessing in store for Marlen.

Marlen had purchased her home through a 30-year mortgage, carrying a significant financial burden each month. After the fire, the insurance company declared her home a total loss. Although Marlen received only $10,000 directly from the insurance settlement, she learned that her outstanding mortgage balance had been paid in full by the insurance company. In that moment, Marlen was freed from a burden she had expected to carry for decades. Her home was now fully paid off.

In the midst of a heartbreaking situation, God's faithfulness was evident through the kindness and generosity of His people. Lillian had the opportunity to care for a woman who had faithfully served alongside her for years. And Lillian's supporters—many of whom may never meet Marlen or David, or even set foot in Heredia—became part of their story through their prayers and generosity.

Marlen’s story reflects God’s provision and faithfulness amid difficult circumstances, even as the work of rebuilding continues. In loss, she gave thanks to God for protecting her son. In need, she experienced His provision through the generosity of Lillian's supporters. And in rebuilding, she witnessed His abundant faithfulness through an unexpected blessing that lifted a burden she had carried for years.

Her story is a reminder that even in life's hardest moments, there is reason for gratitude—and that God's goodness remains steadfast through it all.
