When Kaylee Bolton first encountered the opportunity to serve in Mexico as a Mesa Intern, she was hesitant. Like many people considering cross-cultural ministry, she wondered whether she was truly equipped to go.
The obstacles seemed significant. She did not have one particular ministry skill to offer. She did not speak Spanish. She had little time to fundraise or prepare. In fact, she had never traveled outside her home state—let alone to another country.
Still, Kaylee sensed God inviting her to take a step of faith. With encouragement and guidance from Mesa Global’s Mobilization team, she made it to Mexico. There, God began a new work in her—one that would eventually lead her far beyond what she had imagined.
During her two-month internship, Kaylee served in the local community, experienced a new culture, and grew in her relationship with God alongside a team of fellow interns. She was supported by team leaders and a mentor who encouraged her to learn Spanish, explore her calling to ministry, and deepen her faith.
That mentor soon became like a sister to her.
“The discipleship she gave me was incredible,” Kaylee says. “She taught me how to read the Bible in Spanish and challenged me to read a verse every day. She also taught me the phrase paso a paso, which means ‘step by step.’ She taught me to literally take it step by step and trust that everything else is in God’s control. I still use that advice today.”
Months later, Kaylee began to see how deeply that lesson had taken root.
After returning to the United States to finish school, she felt an unexpected desire to return to Mexico. It was a step she had never included in her original plans, and she spent months wrestling with what it might mean.
An apprenticeship would last two years—not two months. It would mean leaving behind her family, friends, and the familiarity of home. The decision came with questions, uncertainty, and no guarantee that every detail would fall neatly into place.
But the faith God had grown in Kaylee during her internship—and the relationships she had formed with Mesa Global’s Mobilization team—gave her a foundation from which to take the next step. After months of prayer, discernment, and conversation, Kaylee decided to return to Mexico as a Mesa Apprentice.
Now, as she prepares to head back to Mexico to begin her apprenticeship, Kaylee is still asking questions and receiving support from the Mobilization team. But she has also become more comfortable with the unknown. She trusts that God is in control and that He will continue to guide her one step at a time.
“God will provide,” she says. “He isn’t going to leave me. I hope He continues to stretch my faith.”
From intern to apprentice. From hesitation to obedience. Kaylee’s journey is a reminder that God does not always reveal the entire path before asking us to follow. He simply invites us to trust Him with the next step.
